March 2006

this week’s audioscrobbler chart. fnac recently had a big sale so a large part of this chart are from things i picked up there. a friend of mine lent me that recent bob dylan documentary(which is excellent). after seeing that i ran out and bought some bob dylan for my collection. i hadn’t listened to him in years. the documentary itself was quite interesting not just for bob’s performances but also for the other people they showed. the odetta clip in particular was an eye opener for me. it was funny how square all the pre-60s folkie radicals looked too.

the visual art of mark mothersbaugh:

During his downtime on early worldwide tours with DEVO, Mark Mothersbaugh began illustrating on postcards to send to his friends, which he still creates, and has been creating every day for over 30 years. It’s an obsessive habit/hobby which still yields anywhere from one to a couple dozen new postcard-sized images per day.

some of these have more than one version. a black and white version and a colour version. for some reason i’m finding myself liking the black and white ones more. via gmtplus9(-15).

one of my students told me about a shop that has metal wind up robots for sale. the shop is really a clothing boutique, but they had some robots. so i got these two. there were others i would have liked to have too, but they were too pricey. these two were cheaper and i’ve always wanted a robot sort of like robby. he would have been cool just as a wind up robot, but the fact that he shoots sparks makes him even cooler.

14 exceptionally memorable movie robots. at least according to the onion’s av club. i’m not convinced. the first six or so i can see, but after that it gets pretty questionable. these were the best they could come up with? surely, including wong faye in this list is a joke? via yip yop.

this is either totally crazy or pure genius. the death star home theater. perfect for that star wars geek with too much change in their pocket. via teamdroid.

monstruos diabolicos. man this is cool. a set of monster stickers from spain. i have no idea why darth vader has blood pouring out of his mouth, but i’m digging it. via eye of the goof.

a few weeks ago my friend patrick was in town. so we spent one evening exploring taiwan storyland. it was pretty fun, but i wish they had more small stuff to see. but still pretty cool. i spied robots in the old family store/gift shop. but i was good and managed to leave without spending a fortune on metal robots. i know patrick from the p5ml. i’m not sure how many people i’ve met from that list, but i’ve yet to be disappointed. everyone has been really cool. i’m thinking i should try to go to tokyo sometime this year so i can hang out with patrick again and meet more of the p5ml brigade.
