July 2007

i’ve been trying to avoid downloading music as half the time i never get around to listening to what i download. but i couldn’t resist downloading an album of abba covers done on the moog. via pcl linkdump.

this weekend was the formoz music festival. so after my summer class on friday i took the high speed rail up to taipei. once again ymck and the aprils were playing(the aprils even set up a special board for leaving comments on their formoz show). they were the main reason i went. i’d forgotten how expensive the festival was and i’m starting to question whether i’ll even bother going next year. with the added transportation costs of getting up to taipei, i’m not sure if it’s worth going just for the few bands i want to see. i found my self rather bored walking around encountering band after band that didn’t really do anything for me.

the aprils and ymck were at a bigger stage than last year. the aprils mentioned that every year the stage is bigger. i don’t think this is neccesarily a good thing. the huge video screens on the sides of the stage just don’t work as well as when they are behind the bands(this was especially true for ymck), and the intimacy of the other shows i’d seen by them was lost to a certain degree. but regardless of these minor quips, the shows were still a lot of fun. the leader of ymck spoke a lot more mandarin than before. sadly they didn’t do my favourite song Yellow, Magenta, Cyan and Black (YMCKのテーマ).

the aprils were the final band for the night on this stage and after the show i went up to where their cds were for sale. they put together a formoz 07 comp cdr for the show which i bought. it has a few demos on it that i didn’t have, but most if not all of everything else on it i already had. most of their cds had already sold out. one guy there was trying to decide on whether to buy their release astro or space dream bathroom and i told him that space dream bathroom was better, though of their releases i prefer pan da + 1 but that was already sold out.

aside from ymck and the aprils i took in some taiwanese band i’d never heard of before. they’re called rabbit is rich. they sounded a bit like they’d stepped out of 1978 or 1979. a bit post-punk, or new wave before that became more pop and commercial. all the songs were in english and they have a female singer full of attitude and anger which was great. too bad more taiwanese female singers aren’t like this. you can hear a few of their songs on their myspace page(i reccomend kick your ass as a starter) and pictures of the band can be found here.

the 20 most cromulent simpsons episodes of all time. there’s a part of me that hates lists like these and a part of me that can’t resist checking them out. that link takes you to number 20(number one hasn’t been posted yet). unlike most lists of this nature this one goes into lots of details about their top twenty including dialogue. i was surprised they actually watched the shows with the commentary. i tried to do that once but i was so annoyed i just stopped watching them. but then in general i’m not big on commentary. i find it, for the most part, a bit on the boring side unless it’s someone like john waters doing the commentary.

a post for those that know me in person. a shot of my wimpy scooter. the colour is a bit off, but it’s still basically it. in person it’s a little more green. i’ve been riding it for about a month now and luckily i’ve yet to kill anyone and no one has hit me(though i see people riding in the wrong direction on the road on a daily basis). things were going fine until today when i was parking and the scooter fell over and the ignition key snapped in two. part of it still in the ignition(thankfully this little action shut off the engine as well). peter had an extra key so he came down after work so i could get my bag out of the seat compartment. i can just imagine my cameras melting(literally – they’re made of plastic afterall) if they had to sit in there through the extremely hot day. tomorrow i need to try to pry out the last bit of the key so i can drive it again.

it looks like one of my favourite people on the planet has returned to blogging. melinda is the person who inspired me to start this blog in the first place, so i’m more than happy to discover she’s at it again.

i can’t believe i didn’t know this was coming out. avant-garde 2: experimental cinema 1928-1954. there looks to be some wonderful stuff on it including films by stan brakhage, marie menken, james broughton, gregory j markopoulos to name a few. i hope they haven’t added new music to any of these. one of the things i disliked about the first set was some of the music they added. regardless, i may have to breakdown and order some dvds.

this is cool. a kit to make a stereo pinhole camera for 30 bucks. i’m curious what kind of film it uses. i’ve heard the same kit is for sale on amazon too, but not done a search to find it. found via a flickr thread(forget which exactly).
