just discovered via filmwasters this great blog called 5B4 which is all about photography and books, and specifically photography books. some very cool things. this post on chris marker was especially interesting:

The filmmaker Chris Marker, throughout his career, has questioned photography and filmmaking and their roles in storytelling and representation of life. His films have often defied categorization. They are part documentary, part self portrait, part history, and part fiction. They challenge representations of history, time and memory and the technologies that record and mediate them.

i know i’d heard of chris marker before, but i had no idea that his film la jetee inspired/influenced much of 12 monkeys or that la jetee was a sci-fi film. i don’t think i’ve ever seen it, but now it’s heading to the top of the list of dvds i want. and happily it is out on dvd.
