so it looks the rumours are true and they are planning to make a sequel to tron:

i’m not sure this is such a good idea. in the trailer the lightcycles look too much like real motorcycles. i’m not sure i like how they have changed the discs too, but i’ll have to wait until seeing the film or more from it to decide on how i feel about it.

edit: looks like the video has been taken down. if it comes back it may be found by searching tr2n.

last weekend peter and i stopped by the tainan flea market. since this flea market is a little small it can be hit and miss. this trip i didn’t come away empty handed. i found this nifty toyota toy:

you’ll have to excuse the poor scan. this toy was only given out at toyota dealers. usually when you had your car worked on or tuned up. there is a male version which i already have(thanks to a toyota owning friend) so it was nice to get the female version to complete the duo. it was a bit more than i probably should have spent on it, but that’s how it goes sometimes.

i also found something i’d never found at this particular flea market before. film!

it expired in 1992. the seller thought i was crazy to be buying it(why are you selling it if you think it’s crazy to buy it in the first place?). at less than a buck(u.s.) a roll i’m not balking at it. plus expired film often yields odd colour shifts which can be quite interesting.

edit: looks like the film isn’t from 1992, but expired in taiwanese year 92 which means it expired about 5 years ago. and to make things odder on the back there is a tag that this was for some sort of mcdonald’s give away or something. did they give away cameras and film a few years ago? i’m very confused by that.

backyard paradises. apparently some sort of pbs series detailing backyard art. looks very cool. there’s video of the various backyards on the site which i haven’t tried to watch yet. the one pictured above was created by a woman in south africa:

It is said that she lay ill in bed one night, considering how dull and grey her life had become, when she resolved, there and then, that she would strive to bring light and color into her life. That simple decision, to embellish her environment, was to grow into an obsessive urge to express her deepest feelings, her dreams and her desires.

not too long ago i bought this pinhole camera kit. it’s part of a series of science related kits put out by science egg. some company based in hk making kits for the hk and taiwan market. this particular one apparently is a camera originally created or sold by the japanese otona no kagaku gakken science kits. it’s a little confusing as they say it originally appeared in issue no. 2 of that magazine. but as far as i can tell no. 2 was not a camera, but issue no. 3 was. so maybe it’s a typo. the other curious thing is the picture of the camera for issue no. 3 is not the same as this camera. hmm.

the camera is pretty cool. it comes with a pinhole:

which is to be expected. but it also comes with a lens:

the picture on the left is of a viewfinder you can put in the back of the camera before taking pictures to help with framing and focus. i’ve not really used it. i have yet to use the lens, but a few shots i’ve seen taken with it by others give a nice soft focus along the edges. something i definately need to do some exploring of.

the kit also comes with a plastic bag containing paper that you can take pictures on. they look like cyanotype. but apparently you use an iron to activate the images(or maybe an iron to dry it? i’m a little unclear on this point). so i’m not sure what it is exactly.

the isbn number is 978-988-99524-0-2. it’s possible it’s sitting in the children’s section in your local china town bookstore. i’ve seen them locally at the tainan and kaohsiung branches of the eslite bookstore.

here’s a flickr set for the test roll i shot with it or all images i’ve taken with it here.

audioscrobbler/last fm have updated their look again. the bitching has already begun. i’m not a big fan of the new layout – too clunky and there are things that just aren’t that neccesary. i don’t need my “library” near the top of the page. i don’t like the fact that i have to scroll down to see the charts(which is my main use for the site anyway). apparently, the charts are updating in real time now. which i guess is kind of neat. but aside from that i’m not seeing much of a benefit from the new look. i suspect this’ll be another case where they don’t really listen to the users and do what they want anyway.

apparently, grace jones is coming out with a new album. the video for what i guess is the first single is one of the best videos i’ve seen in a long time. check it out:

this is pretty cool. a site devoted to cuban poster art. some very cool stuff here. it’s sad that today’s poster art is often, well, boring. via everlasting bort.
